How to grow Blackcurrants
Blackcurrants grow in a range of soils but prefer deep moisture-retentive conditions, which must be well drained. It is very easy to grow your own soft fruit. Planting in autumn and winter is usually preferable although we you may buy blackcurrant plants from us right throughout the year subject to availability. basal buds. Bushes should be spaced 1.2 – 1.5m apart. After planting, cut down all the shoots to one bud to encourage new growth.
The fruit of the blackcurrant are borne on ‘strigs’ in bunches. Harvest the fruit when dry and ripe but still firm by removing the whole bunch, not the individual fruit. Fruits may be eaten either fresh or stored by bottling, preserving or freezing.
