Taxus baccata - English Yew
The native English Yew tree (Taxus baccata) makes for a superbly dense and hardy evergreen conifer hedge and is an ideal choice of plant for establishing a formal, classical style hedge, with a moderate rate of growth, averaging a maximum of 30cm per year. Yew can be planted as an evergreen hedge to provide an instant screening effect in order to hide unwanted obtrusions and guarantee privacy. The other big advantage of yew hedging is that it tolerates being pruned hard and even into the old wood, unlike the majority of conifers.
The Yew tree is long lived (exceptionally in some cases, exceeding 1000 years) and is tolerant of a wide range of soil types ranging from chalky soils to sandy soils that are in sunny or shady conditions. It is best to avoid planting in sites that are not well drained. Yew is also notable for being very frost resilient. Taxus baccata's ability to thrive in shadier sites makes it an excellent choice of hedging conifer that can grow comfortably under the canopy of larger tree species. Visit us in person for specific advice regarding growing conditions and the suitability of Taxus baccata for your garden.
Yew topiary
Traditionally Yew also makes an excellent subject for topiary as it can be easily pruned into formal shapes, such as pyramids, cones, squares and balls - all of which we stock and deliver at Spring Reach Nursery. Taxus pyramids or cones look especially good when used for a formal entrance or a long a driveway.
